A bridge on the Roanoke Canal Trail between Roanoke Avenue and River Road is out and will need replacing.

Roanoke Rapids Parks and Recreation Maintenance Superintendent Ryan Newsome said the bridge is located around the 2.5 mile marker. It is located in the area of the trail in which users can see the WestRock paper mill.

Newsome said a couple of rotted boards were discovered on the bridge and upon closer inspection it was determined the structure was weakened.

The department is now in the process of determining whether the bridge should be replaced or another culvert project should be done. The department replaced two bridges nearer River Road with culverts last year.

Doing a culvert project will require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer’s involvement.
