Rebecca Ann “Becky” Roughton Abernathy, 74, of Roanoke Rapids, died November 3, 2021 at Vidant North Hospital.

Becky was born September 23, 1947 in Halifax County, the daughter of Jack and Ella Mae Bolton Roughton, both who preceded her in death.

Raised by her grandparents, Rufus and Troy Bolton, Becky was a 1965 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School. She retired following 30 years of service at JP Stevens. 

Becky enjoyed spending time at the beach, particularly at Nags Head. 

She was an animal lover, especially her dogs. 

One of her favorite past times was enjoying hamburgers and hot dogs at Second Street Lunch. She was a member of East 10th Street Christian Church. 

Becky is survived by her husband, Donald Ray Abernathy; her son, Buck Brown; brothers, Jack Roughton and George Woodruff; sisters, Della Ferguson and Donna Johnston; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a special cousin, Mary R. Snead; and also a number of other cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 am until 10:45 am Monday at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service, with the funeral service to follow at 11:00 am in the Chapel.  Minister Jason Yeatts will preside. Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
