Back in the Classroom: A Special Visit to AP English
On Friday, February 7, I had the privilege of stepping back into my former role as an English teacher at Roanoke Rapids High School. Teaching our AP English Literature class was a full-circle moment, as I previously taught the course at RRHS before becoming superintendent. It was a joy to work with our seniors as we discussed strategies for the upcoming AP English Literature exam. Using a passage and multiple-choice questions from The Canterbury Tales General Prologue, we practiced test-taking strategies, reviewed the 2024 essay questions, and had a mini-lesson on avoiding plagiarism in writing.
Beyond academics, I asked the seniors to reflect on their years in RRGSD and share with me what they loved most about their experiences as well as their ideas for improvement.
Many spoke highly of Jacket Time, open lunch, the beauty of the RRHS campus, and the celebration of students through social media, the website, Board meetings, and The Yellow Jacket Report.
Their suggestions were insightful and included ideas such as expanding our art and welding programs. I was truly thankful for the opportunity to connect with students and share my love of English once again!
RRHS Musicians Shine at All-District Band
Our talented band students continue to make us proud!
On February 1 and 2, three students from Roanoke Rapids High School performed in the Eastern All-District Band at East Carolina University. Nicole Crowder represented RRHS in the 9th/10th grade ensemble, while Abygail Magana and Jordan McCain performed in the 11th/12th grade ensemble. These students displayed outstanding musicianship and professionalism, serving as excellent representatives of our district. Congratulations to Nicole, Abygail, and Jordan!
Celebrating National School Counseling Week
This week, we recognize and celebrate our incredible school counselors during National School Counseling Week.
Our counselors play a vital role in supporting students academically, socially, and emotionally, and we are grateful for their dedication.
Roanoke Rapids High School – Jessica Elias and Sabrina Hunter
Roanoke Rapids Early College – Angie Rowe
Chaloner Middle School – Schna Jeffers
Manning Elementary School – Delaney Clark
Belmont Elementary School – Kendra Floyd & intern Miss Sneed-Schoulars
Their commitment to helping students navigate challenges, plan for the future, and achieve their goals is invaluable. Please join me in thanking our school counselors for all that they do!
Roanoke Valley Pathway Leadership Trip: Healthcare Career Day
Our students recently participated in the Roanoke Valley Pathway Leadership Trip, which focused on Healthcare Career Day. On Thursday, January 30, students engaged in hands-on activities and gained valuable insights into healthcare professions. This experience provided a deeper understanding of career pathways in the medical field, inspiring many to explore opportunities in healthcare. We appreciate the collaboration between our schools and community partners in providing these enriching experiences.
Recognizing Student Achievements
At Manning and Belmont Elementary Schools, students were recently honored at their awards day celebrations. We are so proud of our young scholars for their hard work and achievements! Recognizing student success is essential in fostering a culture of excellence and motivation. Thank you to our dedicated teachers and staff for making these celebrations meaningful for our students and their families.
Our youngest learners at Clara Hearne spent the week studying dental hygiene, learning about the importance of caring for their teeth and developing healthy habits. A special reminder to parents: Preschool registration for the 2025-26 school year will be held on March 27, 2025. If you are interested in registering your child, please call 252-519-7700 to schedule a 30-minute appointment for that day.
Board Committee Meetings Tonight
As a reminder, our Board Committees will meet tonight (Tuesday) at the following times:
6:00 PM – Policy Committee and Finance & Personnel Committee
7:00 PM – Curriculum Committee and Facilities & Safety Committee
These meetings are open to the public, and we encourage community members to attend and stay engaged in the decision-making process that impacts our schools.
Looking Ahead
As we continue through February, we remain focused on providing our students with high-quality educational experiences and opportunities for success. Thank you to our teachers, staff, parents, and community members for your continued support of our schools.
Go Yellow Jackets! Together we succeed!
