An 18-year-old Roanoke Rapids man has been charged in a shooting on Madison Street Monday.

Terry Louis Kearney Jr., 18, of Stack Powell Road, faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and carrying a firearm to the terror of the public.

The charges stem from a shooting that occurred in the 100 block of Madison Street Monday around 11:30 a.m. where a 16-year-old male victim was shot at least once in the abdominal area.

Roanoke Rapids Police Detective Corey Dixon's investigation does not reveal what prompted the shooting.

Captain Andy Jackson said the investigation did reveal there were five calls for service the day before referencing an argument between the parties.

Jackson also confirmed that Kearney was the person police had detained following the shooting.

Kearney was jailed on $50,000 secured bond and has an April 30 court date.

It was unclear why the 16-year-old victim, who police declined to identify, was out of school Monday.
