Wayne Smith has decided to withdraw from the Roanoke Rapids City Council race, leaving only one person challenging for Ed Liverman's District 2 seat which he is vacating.

“Extenuating circumstances in my personal life dictate this decision,” a letter dated with today's date said. “My love and continued interest in the well being of our city will always be in my heart and my mind and hopefully some day I can pursue my dreams of serving our citizens.”

Smith declined comment beyond the letter.

His decision leaves Carol Harris Cowen as the sole contender for the seat.
