A disagreement over bed space in the Halifax County Jail has led to extortion charges being filed against two inmates.
Detective Roy Rooks of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday charged Deunta Squire of Roanoke Rapids and Timothy Arrington of Enfield.

Arrington, left, and Squire.
Rooks said in January the victim was incarcerated in the same block as Squire, 22, and Arrington, 21, when the two charged in the case allegedly threatened the victim if he didn’t pay for his bottom bed space.
Squire and Arrington sought the victim’s canteen and meals, Rooks said.
The victim refused and the suspects allegedly assaulted him. The minor injuries sustained in the assault led to treatment and the victim took out a warrant for simple assault.
The investigation led to the separation of the inmates and the additional charges.
Arrington was given a $2,500 bond and Squire, who was charged in a deadly home invasion in Littleton in December, was given a $25,000 bond.
They have April 11 court dates.
