A 20-year woman died in a car crash inside the city limits Saturday night and the man driving faces numerous charges.
The crash occurred shortly before 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 158 and Georgia Avenue.
Danny Kearney, 45, of Gordon Drive, was driving a Lincoln when witnesses say the speeding vehicle passed the vehicle in front of it. Kearney bumped the vehicle he was trying to pass, which caused the Lincoln to veer across opposite lane. The Lincoln went down an embankment and struck a tree on the driver’s side.
Kearney walked away from the crash with minor injuries and was found walking down Vine Street by Sergeant Richard White of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department.
Captain Andy Jackson said Jessica Alston was ejected from the vehicle and died.
No one in the car Kearney passed was injured.
Kearney faces charges of felony death by motor vehicle, felony hit and run death, DWI, fictitious tags and fail to reduce speed. He was jailed on $11,000 bond and has a July 6 court date.
