Two-tractor trailer rigs were stolen from Waste Industries on Highway 301 after thieves cut the locks to the waste transfer facility just outside Weldon sometime between last night and this morning.
Detective R. Somogyi of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said employees discovered the gate to the business open around 5:30 this morning.
It is not clear whether keys were in the trucks.
The trucks are used to haul trash from the transfer station to Bertie County. The trailers were empty at the time they were stolen, Somogyi said.
The rigs belong to First Tee Transport. The trucks are blue Kenworth models with FT on the doors. The trailers are 53-feet long and silver.
Meanwhile, Somogyi said he is investigating a break-in that occurred in the Aurelian Springs Road area of the Darlington community Tuesday morning around 10 a.m.
Someone kicked in the door of a house and took a television and two firearms. A white Crown Victoria was seen leaving the area.
Anyone with information on either crime is encouraged to call Somogyi at 252-593-1021 or Crimestoppers at 252-583-4444.
