The Weldon Police Department continues to investigate an early morning crash that claimed the life of woman walking on Country Club Road.

Captain James Avens said Officer L. Clanton responded to the scene near Stuart Circle around 2:30 this morning.

Preliminary investigation shows the woman, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin in California, was walking north on Country Club Road.

A vehicle traveling south on the road passed a slower moving vehicle in a passing zone and struck the woman, who was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Both drivers stopped. The victim, who is well known in the Weldon area, was wearing dark clothing on what Avens described as a dark highway.
