An argument between a stepfather and son Saturday led to shooting charges against the elder man.

Robert Louis Carey, 68, of Roanoke Rapids, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and discharging a weapon into an occupied dwelling.

The shooting occurred on Haven Drive in Roanoke Rapids. Halifax County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Josh Clark observed a man with a rifle after arriving at the scene. He secured the man and the weapon without incident.

Major Bruce Temple said further investigation revealed Cary and his stepson got into an altercation that involved threats before escalating into a fight with garden tools.

Temple said Carey allegedly went into his house and retrieved a .22-caliber rifle. He allegedly made repeated attempts to shoot his stepson at a neighboring residence.

The victim was shot in the leg after opening his door. He had been shot at twice beforehand.

The victim was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Carey was jailed on $250,000 bond and has a September 1 court date.
