Approximately 200 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from a jackknifed tractor-trailer late Thursday night on Interstate 95, according to Gaston Fire and Rescue.

Chief Ed Porter Jr. said emergency units were dispatched to the southbound lane at the North Carolina Welcome Center shortly after 10:30.

The call involved the wreck of two tractor-trailers, one that jackknifed and blocked both travel lanes. Another 18-wheeler carrying vehicles was in the ditch.

Virginia authorities diverted southbound traffic to Highway 301.

There were no injuries but the jackknifed rig was leaking heavy amounts of fuel.

Firefighters contained the spill by diking the median to keep the fuel from flowing into the water supply.

Crews remained on the scene for several hours as the area was cleaned up and assessed.

The state Highway Patrol is investigating.
