A Littleton area man was arrested Monday night for an attempted rape that occurred in May.

Detective J.M. Clark of the Halifax County Sheriff's Office said Deputy Chris Boden arrested 39-year-old Vernon Powell Jr at his residence.

Warrants for attempted second-degree rape and sexual battery were obtained based on an investigation into a report received in May.

Lieutenant George Evans assisted Clark in the investigation, learning the assault occurred within the victim's home, also located in the Littleton area. The victim and Powell were acquaintances.

Powell was jailed on $50,000 bond and has a February 25 court date.
