Two men surrendered to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office this week to face charges stemming from a fight the evening of February 6.

Detective Josh Clark said evidence he collected during his investigation showed both parties, Colton Barfield, 27, and Wayne Lassiter, 52, were aggressors in the fight, which occurred at a residence on Hamil Street in Roanoke Rapids.

First responders that evening found that Barfield, of Littleton, had been assaulted more than once with an aluminum softball bat and was initially transferred to Halifax Regional Medical Center — then to another facility.

Clark, with assistance from Corporal Josh Langley, found evidence through his investigation to charge Lassiter, who is acquainted with Barfield through family, with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury.

He charged Barfield with simple assault.

Clark said the fight appeared to have started over an argument the two had during a phone conversation.

Lassiter surrendered to Clark Monday and Barfield surrendered to deputies the following day.

Lassiter received a $5,000 bond and Barfield a $1,000 bond. They each have March 18 court dates.
