More than 1,400 Dominion Power customers in Halifax and Northampton counties remain without electricity this evening following a brief but powerful storm that swept in around 5 p.m.
The storm mainly concentrated in Roanoke Rapids causing trees to fall in many areas around the city as well as power lines.
Dominion's website did not have a specific timeline for power restoration but noted on its outage map the storm, which brought heavy winds, rains and hail, was the cause of the outages.
Roanoke Rapids Public Works Director Larry Chalker said it was not immediately clear whether wind shears accompanied the storm that felled trees and power lines.
There was no immediate answer at the National Weather Service Raleigh office this evening.
