The State Employee's Credit Union has submitted an initial sketch of its proposed bank on Tenth Street.

The filing of the sketch goes along with two other projects planned in the city — $250,000 in renovations to Taco Bell and plans filed for the up-fit of four buildings in the Dunham's shopping area off Premier Boulevard which could pave the way for a Label Shopper store in that area.

The initial sketch of the new SECU, which is filed at the city's planning and development department, shows an 8,500-square feet building which will front Jefferson Street and have access on Jefferson Street and East Tenth Street.

Planning and Development Director Kelly Lasky said the sketch shows SECU plans to keep the entire 4 ½ acres it purchased from the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District.

At each meeting, Lasky said the banners honoring veterans on the fence facing Tenth Street have been brought up. “We hope they exercise respect when relocating them or returning the banners.”

The sketch submitted to the city does not reflect that SECU intends to widen egress to East Tenth Street, Lasky said.

Possible construction is eyed for spring.

Taco Bell

Taco Bell on Julian R. Allsbrook Highway plans a new brick facade, side canopy, new front windows, a new walk-in cooler and replacement of existing bathrooms and existing counters as well as a new configuration for the dining area.

The restaurant is the latest on the highway to do renovations, Lasky said, after Waffle House did refurbishing along with New Dixie Mart's Dairy Queen restaurant following the opening of Popeye's and Zaxby's. “The improvements are something that is more visually appealing,” Lasky said.

Label Shopper

Meanwhile, Label Shopper, which according to its Facebook page, sells in-demand, name brand fashions at deep discounts, has submitted plans to the city to review for building code compliance for an up-fit to possibly bring a store to the Dunham's shopping center area.

If built, the store would occupy four spaces currently vacant next to Dunham's.

The chain has numerous locations throughout the Atlantic region and Midwest including one in Ahoskie.
