The Roanoke Rapids Police Department reported the following, according to Chief Chuck Hasty:
Friday October 9, 2015
At approximately 9:30 p.m., Officer Ariel Burgess responded to a hit and run call in the 400 block of Old Farm Road.
The victim’s parked vehicle was struck and another vehicle was there with no driver.
During the investigation Burgess located Paul Spiegler, 58, of Roanoke Rapids, at his residence, and arrested and charged him with driving while impaired and hit and run with property damage.
Spiegler was released to a responsible person until his court date on December 11.
Deputy Chief Andy Jackson and officers Jonathan Benthall and Matt Hunsucker assisted.
Saturday October 10, 2015
At approximately 2 a.m., Hunsucker responded to an assault call in the Forest Hills Shopping Center parking lot.
While officers were on the way the accused left the area on a vehicle.
Hunsucker conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle at East Tenth and Jefferson streets.
During Hunsucker’s interaction with the driver, Vernon Jenkins Jr., 33, of Roanoke Rapids, the officer noticed a strong odor of alcohol.
After conducting a field sobriety test, Hunsucker arrested and charged Jenkins with driving while impaired and no operators license.
Jenkins received a $500 bond and a December 14 court date.
Benthall and Officer Chris Biggerstaff assisted.
The victim in the assault was located in the vehicle, but refused to cooperate with prosecution.
Sunday October 11, 2015
At approximately 4:36 a.m., Hunsucker responded to a call about suspicious activity captured on a home surveillance system in the 1200 block of Charlotte Street, which was also posted to social media.
The victim told Hunsucker a white male was captured on the system approaching vehicles parked in the driveway, but when the motion light came on he ran off.
Around noon the victim interacted with Ball and Officer Scott Blythe, telling them he located the person on Williams Street.
Officers identified the boy as Aaron Ray Scott, 16, of Roanoke Rapids.
Blythe arrested and charged Scott with attempted breaking and entering of a motor vehicle.
Scott received a $1,000 bond and a November 4 court date.
“The video from the surveillance system and the victim’s use of social media helped play an important part in solving this case quickly,” Hasty said. “The motion sensor light also prevented the suspect from actually going into the vehicles. I would like to thank all the people that helped the victim find the suspect and thank the victim for calling the police department instead of taking out street justice.”
At approximately 9 p.m., Burgess responded to a domestic assault in the 200 block of Washington Street.
The victim told Burgess Herman Lee Squire, 57, of Roanoke Rapids, assaulted her during an argument. The victim had an injury to the face.
Burgess arrested and charged Squire, who was jailed without the opportunity for bond, with assault on a female.
He has an October 16 court date.
