The Northampton County Sheriff's Office is investigating a Sunday night breaking and entering in which the victim, who in the end was struck in the head with a gun, tried to fight back.

The home invasion occurred on Erma Garner Trail in the Garysburg area near Warner Bridge Road.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m. Deputy Kenny Melton responded and learned the victim answered a knock at the door and two people described as black males wearing masks forced their way in, one of them brandishing a handgun.

Captain Chuck Hasty said in a statement the victim began to fight until he was hit in the head with gun. Undisclosed items were demanded of the victim, who was able to escape and call for help.

The men left the residence on a dark colored car and were last seen headed toward the area of the Virginia state line.

Both men were described as brown-skinned, one tall and one short.

The victim was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Hasty declined to comment this morning on whether the break-in was random or targeted.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call the sheriff's office at 252-534-2611.
